To strengthen EMI teaching competence, the College of Management at Asia University held a professional development workshop on April 22, 2025. Professor Peng-Yu Li from the Department of Business Administration at National Chung Hsing University was invited to speak on “Encouraging Participation and Discussion in the EMI Classroom.” The event attracted enthusiastic participation not only from faculty across departments within the College of Management but also from departments such as Computer Science, Optometry, Healthcare Administration, and Psychology.

Held from 12:00 to 1:30 PM in Room M405, the session focused on common challenges in EMI instruction. Professor Li noted that EMI courses are often time-consuming to prepare, and students may struggle to participate effectively due to language or content comprehension barriers, which can impact overall teaching evaluations.

To address these issues, Professor Li shared various strategies to foster interaction. She emphasized the importance of building a positive classroom atmosphere from day one, encouraging students to speak up and engage actively, regardless of their English fluency. Setting clear learning objectives, providing pre-class materials and key vocabulary, and offering brief post-class summaries in Chinese were recommended to support learners with lower English proficiency.
Interactive elements such as group discussions and multicultural collaboration were also suggested to enhance both language skills and intercultural communication. Simple English Q&A activities can lighten the atmosphere and promote natural engagement with diverse perspectives.

The event was co-hosted by the Bilingual Education Promotion Office at Asia University’s College of Management and the EMI Teaching Resource Center of National Chung Hsing University. The workshop was well-received, offering practical insights and lively interaction, and participants expressed hope for more such events to support EMI teaching excellence and professional growth.
