The 2025 International Conference on Legal Philosophy, jointly organized by the Department of Financial and Economic Law at Asia University (AU), the East Asia Legal Studies Center, and the East Asian Association for Philosophy of Law, was successfully held at Asia University from September 26 to 27. Centered on the theme “Rule of Law and Democracy in the Era of De-Globalization,” the conference brought together distinguished scholars from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan to explore the profound transformations and theoretical challenges facing the rule of law and democracy in East Asia amid de-globalization, geopolitical shifts, and the climate crisis.
Professor Tai-San Chiu, Distinguished Chair Professor at AU, remarked that it was highly meaningful to engage in scholarly dialogue with international experts on the pressing issues of contemporary legal philosophy. He emphasized that hosting this conference demonstrates AU’s commitment to addressing global legal challenges and fostering international collaboration.
Professor Ken Suzuki, President of the East Asian Association for Philosophy of Law, expressed sincere appreciation for AU’s thoughtful organization of the event. He noted that the conference not only encouraged interdisciplinary dialogue in legal philosophy but also strengthened academic cooperation and mutual understanding, injecting new momentum into legal research in East Asia.
The two-day event featured multiple panel sessions covering topics such as AI and the Law, and Justice and Social Institutions from an East Asian Perspective. Scholars from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds offered multifaceted insights, sparking rich interdisciplinary discussion and showcasing the depth and breadth of academic exchange.
In his closing remarks, Professor Yen-Tzu Chuang, Chair of the Department of Financial and Economic Law, stated that the conference deepened international scholarly dialogue on the rule of law and democracy and expressed hope for the continued expansion of this platform to further promote the development of legal studies.
